Accredited Exercise Physiology FAQ

What Is The Difference Between Exercise Physiology and Physiotherapy?

Accredited Exercise Physiologists have a specialty in movement-based rehabilitation and interventions.

We use various specific movements, combinations of movements and a certain structuring of our exercises in a session to get the most optimal movement, activation and adaptation within the body. Physiotherapy work primarily in hands on therapy, targeting sources of pain and aiming to alleviate that pain through release of specific muscles to correct movements.

Physiotherapy can often prescribe some movements and exercises as rehabilitation, however Exercise Physiology have a broader knowledge of exercise and adaptation within the body to not only work with injury but also with chronic conditions and mental health conditions.

What AEP Services Do You Offer?

Accredited Exercise Physiologists can work with a number of referral pathways and also cater for privately funded sessions where you don’t need a referral. The range of services we offer include:

  • Medicare Referrals
  • NDIS
  • Work Cover Compensation
  • Small Group Exercise with Individualised Programs
  • Injury Rehabilitation
  • Chronic Disease Management
  • Active Aging for Adults Over 65yrs
  • Online Programming
  • Weight Loss Programs

Can I Claim Exercise Physiology on Private Health?

Yes. The rebate amount will depend on your health fund and health cover.

Will I Work Up A Sweat In My Exercise Physiology Sessions?

That depends on the focus of our sessions. Often, you may sweat from the volume or intensity of exercises in our sessions.

At other times you might not if it is a recovery session or specific rehabilitation movements which may be small specific movements and exercises, but the exercises may be more difficult than you think.

How Long Will I Need To See An Exercise Physiologist For?

This depends on the condition or injury we are treating and how committed you are to your program.

In terms of injury rehabilitation, the process may be across a number sessions and be several weeks to months. Whereas a chronic disease program, eg Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension or Stroke, may be several months or longer to get the required adaptation in the body and make a healthy change.

Nothing occurs overnight, but your persistence and commitment to a program will greatly influence the progress.

What Can I Expect In My First AEP Appointment?

With an Exercise Physiologist, the initial appointment will consist of an in depth medical history, current concerns regarding injuries/conditions you have and a discussion about your goals and a potential structure or progression of rehabilitation.

You will be required to go through some physical testing such as movement analysis, strength and cardiovascular testing as well, but it wouldn’t be a full workout session until your second visit.
